Moguisteine(BBR-2173) is a new peripheral non-anesthetic antitussive agent, and its efficacy was confirmed to be comparable to that of codeine in guinea pig and dog experimental models of induced cough. "It does not act through either opioid receptors or cough centers, but may function along the bronchial tree by interacting with rapidly adapting stimulatory receptors." In controlled clinical trials, moguisteine is safe and effective in reducing cough-related symptoms such as respiratory disorders caused by upper respiratory tract infections, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, and malignancies.
