E-64 is a non-reversible, selective cysteine protease inhibitor that also inhibits papain, calpsin and cathepsins B, H, but not serine or aspartic proteases. The IC50 of inhibiting papain was 9nM. E-64 induces oxidative stress and apoptosis in filarial parasites.
